Costs To Build

Cost to build decks and roof decks:

The cost to build a deck or roof deck cannot be calculated per sq ft. There are too many variables at play in each different design. But we can give you examples of popular types of decks for comparison.

These are the most common deck sizes, and finishes we build and are asked for quotes on:

The most commonly requested materials are Trex Select composite decking and Azack Trademark handrails.

A 16ft x 16ft roof deck accessed with a set of metal spiral stairs from a back porch.

Finished with composite decking and PVC handrails start at approx. $45k. The cost of this can rise dramatically by swapping the finishes for hardwood decking, cable rail handrails, gas lines, fire alarm beacons, water lines, or by the need for steel beams to support your new roof deck off of your roof surface due the added weight of the new structure. Includes one power outlet.

A 16 x 16 roof deck accessed by a set of interior stairs to a bubble hatch or head house.

Finished with composite decking and PVC handrails start at approx. $64K. Again, the cost of this can rise dramatically by swapping the finishes for hardwood decking, cable rail handrails, gas lines, fire alarm beacons, water lines, or by the need for steel beams to support your new roof deck off of your roof surface due the added weight of the new structures. Includes one power outlet.

Keep in mind that putting a new roof deck on top of an old rubber roof is not a good idea. It is often advised that replacing the rubber roof or at the very least giving it a clean bill of health from a roofing contractor first is best advised. If a new roof is needed, we can also provide this for you there are a couple of benefits to having us do it too.

Finished with composite decking and PVC handrails start at approx. $36k The cost of this can rise dramatically by swapping the finishes for hardwood decking, cable rail handrails, gas lines, fire alarm beacons, water lines, or by the need for steel beams to support your new roof deck off of your roof surface due the added weight of the new structure. Includes one power outlet.

  1. We have our own roofing division and having one company do both aspects keeps any new roof warranty fully in place after the new deck is built. A separate roofing company may not honor the warranty if a deck is built on their rubber roof.
  2. Logistics are streamlined and set-up costs and admin fees are reduced therefore giving you better value. We offer the same 10 year warranty as any other installer.

Boston style triple level rear deck without any exterior stairs.

The cost to tear down an existing 3-level rear deck system, install new footings to meet new building codes, frame with all new Preservative Treated lumber (PT), install all new composite decking, install new PVC handrails, repair any siding that may be affected when a new frame is attached to the building, new flashings, etc typically starting around $60K and upwards depending on the size of the footprint. The cost of this can go up if higher-end finishes are used. But the cost can also be less if all PT lumber is used for the handrails and decking. Adding or having stairs will add about $14-18K to the price to build.
